China’s ‘land aircraft carrier’ charges flying drone with microwave beam (scmp.com)

Community iconc/technology@lemmy.world by

Scientists in China have demonstrated a wireless power transmission system that uses a ground-based microwave emitter to beam energy to an antenna array mounted on the aircraft’s underside. Importantly, they were able to do this while both the drone and charging system were in motion.

NASA Shuts Off Instrument on Voyager 1 to Keep Spacecraft Operating (science.nasa.gov)

Community iconc/technology@lemmy.world by
Vogi@piefed.social
he/him 15 hours ago

Engineers are confident that shutting down the LECP will give Voyager 1 about a year of breathing room. They are using the time to finalize a more ambitious energy-saving fix for both Voyagers they call “the Big Bang,” which is designed to further extend Voyager operations. The idea is to swap out a group of powered devices all at once — hence the nickname — turning some things off and replacing them with lower-power alternatives to keep the spacecraft warm enough to continue gathering science data.

Toddler Forced Back Into ICE Detention After Nearly Dying

Toddler Forced Back Into ICE Detention After Nearly Dying (newrepublic.com)

Community iconc/progressivepolitics@lemmy.world by
CubitOom@infosec.pub

At the time, Amalia was a healthy toddler with no known issues. The water at Dilley smelled strange, so her parents, Kheilin Valero Marcano and Stiven Arrieta Prieto, bought bottled water at the center’s commissary for her, despite having no income in detention. (The article noted that nonprofit organizations who work on immigrants’ rights, such as Human Rights First and RAICIES, have found that families detained at Dilley say the water there is “unclean, foul-smelling, and causes stomachaches.”)

Hi I’m a volunteer in a youth center. Some time ago, their organization switched to OneDrive and their old server got shelved. I thought it would be a waste to just throw it out, but I’m not sure what to do with it. It runs on an outdated system (CentOS 7, I believe), but otherwise works fine.

Copy, Paste, Govern: Microsoft ghostwrote EU policy that keeps data centres' energy use secret (corporateeurope.org)

Community iconc/technology@lemmy.world by
Deep@mander.xyz

The EU Commission’s policy on data centres keeps information on individual centres’ energy and water use under wraps. Research by Corporate Europe Observatory and AlgorithmWatch, and published by Investigate Europe and media across Europe, reveals the Commission copied and pasted an amendment suggested by Microsoft and the lobby group Digital Europe. The aim? In the face of growing resistance, to prevent NGOs from obtaining information on energy-hungry data centres.

Apple CLI command to mount an SMB share that isn't abysmally slow

Community iconc/selfhosted@lemmy.world by

I’ve finally got tired of how bad the latency and transfer speeds are when mounting my TrueNas SMB shares on my macbook. I looked online for some solutions, but didn’t really have much success with them. I managed to get to this command that seems to be a lot better: mount_smbfs -o soft, nobrowse "//<username>@<domain or ip>/apps" "$HOME/mnt/apps" where /mnt/apps is a directory that I created for myself. In this case I’m mounting a share called “apps”. For now it actually seems to be pretty responsive and loads directories and files at an acceptable speed.

IPv6 With ISP That Only Does 6rd

Jul (they/she)@piefed.blahaj.zone

I’ve mostly stuck with IPv4 in my LAN, but ive been wanting more and more to more to move to IPv6, if only for the learning experience. Since my ISP only uses 6rd and so I can’t get a static IP much less a GUA subnet to use, I’m trying to decide strategy for setting up the network, NAT, etc. And I know it’s probably not worth the effort, but again at this point it’s more a learning exercise.

The group verifies and tracks immigration arrests in the state, but its figures are likely an undercount.

On the kernel security list we’ve seen a huge bump of reports. We were between 2 and 3 per week maybe two years ago, then reached probably 10 a week over the last year with the only difference being only AI slop, and now since the beginning of the year we’re around 5-10 per day depending on the days (fridays and tuesdays seem the worst). Now most of these reports are correct, to the point that we had to bring in more maintainers to help us.
